Lori Weitzner Assemblage

Assemblage: an artistic process; a collection of people or things;
a gathering; compositions, putting together found objects.
My intention is to bring together that which inspires me and share with colleagues and friends.

After an amazing semester long collaboration with Philadelphia University grad design students, I feel a renewed excitement for all that means "thinking outside the box".  I have learned myself that process can be just as important as the final product - one never knows how something might evolve!

I recently spent a weekend with my family in Philadelphia. While there, I stumbled upon an exhibition of Shizuko Kimura's work at The Moore College of Art.  My favorite class in art school was figure drawing; I wish I had thought then about using a needle and thread to create my impressions!

Kimura works magic to capture live models with a needle and thread on fabric, without the aid of preliminary sketches or photographs.  She fuses Asian aesthetics with Western concepts of figurative art and abstraction demonstrating the subtlety of the stitched mark with its varieties of line and weight.  This cannot be achieved in any other media.

From her sketch book

I had the honor of attending the New York School of Interior Design's Spring Benefit, which presented a lifetime achievement award to one of my greatest mentors, Jack Lenor Larsen. I would not have the career I have without his guidance and support.

This past Monday I had the privilege of attending DIFFA's 15th annual Dining by Design as a guest of Roger Thomas.

Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS is one of the country's largest supporters of direct care for people living with HIV/AIDS and preventative education for those at risk. What is especially inspiring is that supporters of the organization come from various fields of fine art and design including architecture, fashion design, interior design, photography and consumer product design.

People living with HIV and AIDS still have a big fight but I am so proud of what the design industry has been able to do.  And can you believe - since its founding in 1984, DIFFA has granted over 40 million dollars to hundreds of AIDS service organizations nationwide!

Here is Ralph Lauren honoring Alfredo Paredes, VP and Chief Retail Creative Officer at Ralph Lauren, with the 2012 David Rockwell DIFFA Service Award.

The table we ate at; hosted by Roger Thomas and designed by Shawn Henderson.

Now enjoying some company!

SAYING GOODBYE TO WINTER...

The changes in season, whichever season, always makes me feel nostalgic until we are fully into the next (perhaps that is how I am with most changes).  I love spring, but will miss much about winter...

Here are some photos from my friend Andrea Wild taken in Altstätten, Switzerland just a few weeks ago...

A poem from Mary McGowan:

Ice is becoming itself

random crystal clusters

kirigami trees   silhouetted

against the last light

       too late, too late

we watch snow fall

through picture windows

       candles and matches

within reach

should all else   fail

At my friend Jessica's dinner party I had the priviledge of sitting next to Richard Rosenblatt. I fell in love with his winter landscapes...
